Part 3 of 6

Listening Together Without Grasping

Opening reflection

Healthy discernment is rarely rushed. It makes room for silence. For listening. For humility. For quieter voices. For truth we may not initially want to hear.

Sometimes God speaks through Scripture. Sometimes through wise counsel. Sometimes through the honest concerns of people we overlooked.

In Acts 15, the early church faced a question that could have split them. Their response was neither speed nor strategy — it was sustained listening together, until they could say, “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” Communal discernment is slower than a vote and humbler than a verdict.

Discernment asks not only, “What do we want to do?” but, “What may God already be saying among us?”

Scripture

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

James 1:19
